I would go Ping G400 over the other at this point. Long and forgiving.
Taylormade and Callaway dont make that big of a difference from previous models forme to shell out cash. Realistically, golf has turned into a four horse race between Taylormade, Callaway, PING, and PXG (I have never hit PXG but I would like to).
The G400 Max is a full 460cc and is designed for maximum forgiveness. Its MOI is higher than the standard G400 which was already the highest on the market. The small amount of distance you might lose out on the occasional perfect longest driver with a G400, you’ll make up with the G400 Max as it’s so damn easy to hit straighter consistently.
I found Rogue similar to Epic, M3/M4 Similar to M1/M2, but PING G400 well above G.I've been attending Demo Days at my clubs for years and never found anything that I was convinced to switch to until a few weeks ago when a friend had his new G400 on the range. Tried three drives and OMG.! Took out a loaner from our Golf Shop and played a round.
Couldn't believe the extra 20 - 30 yards I was getting. Head Pro said keep it for a few more rounds.
Played seven rounds in total and the numbers didn't lie. Ordered the G400Max, which arrived last week. It's a game changer, giving me more opportunities for GIR and cap heading south.! Your experience seems to differ from TXG testing, by similar, but OPOSITE MARGIN. It seems like Callaway drivers with their jailbreak tech are continuing what they started last year. If you hit the center of the club they will have the highest ball speed. When properly fit they have the potential to be the longest. But there are 2 other significant factors that come into play.1) We don't always hit the center of the face. This gives the other manufacturers a fighting chance to keep up. Ping especially is working very hard at maintaining ball speed and direction with off center hits.
This means, depending on your strike location, with the Ping drivers their average ball speed with multiple hits could be higher than what you can achieve with a Callaway driver.2) In addition to ball speed your launch conditions also have a significant impact on distance. The different driver heads all have slightly different launch conditions. (launch angle, spin) This means a driver that has less ball speed could end up hitting the ball farther because the launch conditions are more ideal. These test result are very telling. Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, Cobra are all very close.Ping wins because their average across multiple players is best. Ping wins with their low spin version even though the testers cover a wide range of abilities and swing speeds. The Ping G Max, which they ranked as 6th, was the most consistent. The shots hit covered the smallest area.
And it still had very good ball speed.I have been listening in on the TXG podcasts on club testing. By getting a driver that is optimized for your specific swing there could be some distance gains to be had. For example, in a recent fitting they presented, a Taylormade driver provided a very potent mid to high launch and low spin alternative that wasn't possible from any of the other manufacturers. In the above shown example comparing the Ping to the Callaway drivers, TXG was trying to illustrate there is an accuracy trade off made when distance becomes the sole goal. The comparison was between a Callaway driver that had been set-up to reduce spin and hit it a long way compared to a Ping driver set-up for high spin to improve accuracy. If they had chosen a Ping set-up to also reduce spin (for example, a Ping LST and T1100 shaft) the results would have been very different. The clubs would have very similar distances. (ie within a few yards of each other) As I suggested above, the Callaway still has potential to hit the longest drive and Ping has the potential to have the longest average across multiple shots. Finally, with all of these new clubs, if they are fit to the person swinging the club the biggest factor remains the quality of the strike.
(where on the face you hit the ball). Off topic but I went to GT yest to see all the new drivers. I did not have time to hit any but I was blown away at how good TM M3 and M4 looked.I have always wanted a driver to sit open st address and after the titleist 905R I have yet to find one. These two drivers are the closest I have seen to face sitting openhas anyone else noticed it?rogue sub zero looked nice but I did not like how the Rogue (regular) sat at addressCouldn't agree with you more. Can't seem to find a driver to knock my 6 year old 905R.
